Finishes
Below is a guide to our core stone finishes for flooring, paving and architectural detailing. Please see individual product pages for the list of recommended finishes for each particular stone. These finishes are recommended to enhance the natural characteristics of each stone.
Aged – Internal finish – Lightly fettered edges with a smooth surface overall created by a light hand-rubbed finishing technique. The ideal finish for creating classical cabochon floors.
Ancient - Internal finish (Applicable to Flat Sawn Surface Only) – The lightly fettered edge and smooth grain combine to create an instant lived in feel.
Antiqued – Internal finish – Fettered edges with a smooth, undulating surface. Hand-finished to recreate an antique look.
Bush Hammered – External finish – Available with either square or chipped edges. Texture is consistent and uniformly distributed across the surface. Mainly used outside for low slip requirements.
Corten – External finish – Square edges and a consistent flat, smooth surface. Flamed and brushed to highlight the natural iron markings creating a contemporary, rusty steel look.
Distressed – Internal finish – Rounded and fettered edges with a smooth, flat finish which is hand-applied to recreate the appearance of old flagstones.
Flamed – External finish – Stone is subjected to high temperature flame and then quickly cooled producing a rough but consistent texture. Square edges and flat surface. Particularly suitable for external areas.
Honed - Internal finish – Square, clean edges with a very smooth, flat surface. The finish achieved can vary from matt to gloss depending on the stone type with harder stones tending to look more polished. Ground to a smooth, flat, consistent surface which is easy to maintain.
Leather – Internal finish – Square edges with a smooth pitted surface which has been created with a special high pressure mechanical action.
Matt Honed – Internal finish – Square, clean edges with a very smooth, flat surface. Almost dusty in appearance.
Matt Leather – Internal finish – Square edges with a smooth matt pitted surface which has been created with a special high pressure mechanical action.
Mellowed – Rounded edges with a time-worn surface patination which is flat and smooth.
Patera – External finish – Square edges with a coarse honed surface finish which gives it an almost dusty appearance, sometimes referred to as fine rubbed. Well suited to low slip areas.
Regency – Internal finish – A unique blend of processes creating edges that are lightly fettered and a surface that is smooth and predominantly flat with slight undulations to create an aged appearance.
Riven - External finish – Fettered or square edges with a riven finish. Riven is a rough, natural and uneven finish, created when stones are skilfully cleft by hand along their thin bed layer.
Rustic - External finish – Chipped edges with a combination of smooth and textured surfaces well-suited to country properties.
Tumbled – The tumbling process creates soft surfaces and edges. Stone is tumbled in a drum with small particles which wear the tile to create a naturally aged look.
Vintage – Internal finish – Chipped edges with a heavily textured, yet smooth, surface. The overall look is worn and soft with an open grain.
Worn – Internal finish & External finish (Applicable to Riven Surface Only) – The nearest finish to a reclaimed antique floor. Years of wear and natural aging are recreated with a hand-finished fettered edge, uneven and smooth surface.
