PROJECT 0917

Bath Abbey

This project is part of Bath Abbey’s multi-million pound Footprint programme of restoration and facility improvements.  The initial element of the programme focused on stabilising the floor as huge voids beneath it were causing the floor to collapse and putting the overall structure of the Abbey at risk.  We were commissioned to replace the broken ledger stones with new stone to match the existing.

Following a site visit with the architects to view the existing stones, we established that whilst the floor had a mix of different ledgers from Carrara Marble through to York, it was Blue Lias and Pennant that were by far the most prevalent.  Therefore a combination of Welsh Blue Pennant and Blue Lias was selected and the finish matched to the remaining centuries old stone.
